The original team was put together by Brit Goldstein ('93). He realized that the intramural league had many high-quality hockey players and wanted to form a team made up of players from the league to play against other schools.

The first season there were no practices and all members played for both an IM team and for the Ice Lions (then known more as an IM all-star team). Usually, each game's roster was filled from whomever could be found for that weekend. The team was funded partially from the IM league and partially by the players and a bit rag tag, but played and supported the school because they wanted to.

The team went 3-1 in the first season, defeating IUP, Lock Haven, and East Stroudsburg and dropping one game to Millersville (in a game in which most of the team got lost en route and did not show up at the rink until midway through).
